Kev Rowe: Interesting

10 musicians/bands Kev loves...

skip to 10 books you might like...

These are all pretty much "unknown" musicians and friends who I have either toured with, recorded with, or just met along the way. They are all beautiful people and have shared similar heartbreaks and triumphs along the "interesting" road of being both dedicated artists and career musicians. Or I just admire the heck out of their music...  And basically, I just want to do my part in letting you know about them, and to turn you on to what I consider to be some really cool people.

1.  Big Leg Emma - Big Leg Emma is the band that I get the privilege of playing electric guitar in, that is based in my hometown, Jamestown, NY.  These guys and gals are my musical family.  And if you haven't heard of the band, please check out the link, and come see us live... www.myspace.com/biglegemma

2.  Sol Driven Train - This is a band from Charleston, SC.  And these were the first musicians I met in town who I really connected with, both on a personal and musical level. Super nice, hard-working, touring dudes.  They let me play on their cd, "lighthouse", and jam with them live numerous times.   They have an awesome horn section and kind of a swinging new orleanzy meets - beachy meets - rootsy, sound.  Here's the link... www.soldriventrain.com

3.  Smackdab - These guys are friends of mine from Jamestown, NY.  They play jazz/funk/fusion and it's real fun, interesting music.  And I've known most of these guys from other bands since I was about 16 years old, so we've seen each other take a lot of different musical paths... www.myspace.com/smackdab

4.  Carla Gover - A couple years ago I got the pleasure of doing some acoustic shows with this "banjo girl from kentucky".  Wow. She's real authentic, and has got some old-timey, bluegrass chops.  Great singer, banjo player, and quick-witted.  Check out her cover of "Girls just wanna have fun"... www.carlagover.com

5.  Dangermuffin - I know, it's a ridiculous name - ridiculous enough to be cool as hell!  Another band from Charleston, these guys are a 3 piece band.  It's cool, they don't have a bass player, but you don't even miss it. They also let me sit in on electric from time to time.  Good guys and they're newest cd is really great... www.dangermuffinmusic.com

6.  Malcolm Holcombe - Okay, I don't know this guy.  But, he is freaking amazing.  And in the carolinas he's a legendary singer/songwriter.  He's kind of like a bluesman who sings mountain songs, if you can imagine that. Great guitar player with incredible lyrics and he's so unique, he's almost hard to digest.  And many people (including my wife) can't stand him cause he's so different sounding.  But, I love him, and you should at least check him out... www.malcolmholcombe.com

7.  Donna the Buffalo - This is probably the most famous band on this list.  They are from Ithaca, NY, and are very well known in the festival scene. And I just wanted to list them here for my songwriter/acoustic friends who might not have heard of them.  My band, Big Leg Emma has done many shows with them.  And in western NY, they don't come bigger. Donna rules! www.donnathebuffalo.com

8.  Sim Redmond Band - Another band from Ithaca, NY. SRB plays really cool, sonic, african, groove-rock.  I love they're guitar player Jordy's sound.  And they're old female singer, Uniit Carruyo sang on my cd, "Into the Gold". Really great, loyal band that's been doing the festival scene for over 10 years now... www.simredmondband.com

9.  Cale Hawkins - Cale is a musician from Jamestown, NY.  He's really just starting off in his career, but man what a start.  He's incredibly talented on many instruments and has made 3 solo cds already at 17 yrs old.  He is on my new cd.  I've known Cale since he was 12.  He'll be making some great music for many years to come... www.calehawkins.com

10.  The Horse Flies - Awesome, super original band from Ithaca, NY.  They are the cream of the crop as far as musicianship goes and a very unique band.  They've played the festivals for years and are a huge influence on me and my friends... www.thehorseflies.com
